Aim Higher

The Aim Higher programme encourages all pupils to extend their learning and interests beyond the classroom, and to strive to do the very best they can in all areas of school life. It provides them with the opportunity to discover what makes them tick, and to develop skills to become confident learners.

Weekly sessions

Weekly lectures and discussion groups are open to all pupils. Topics are varied and recent ones have included: philanthropy, the art of strategy, decoding a new language and self-confidence.

Conferences

The annual Aim Higher Conferences provide further opportunity for departments to inspire pupils in their subject area.

Tudor Diploma

This takes place in Key Stage 3 and enables all pupils to gain invaluable learning skills, such as research, public speaking and problem-solving. In addition, they showcase their involvement and achievements in activities beyond the classroom.

There are 4 sections to the diploma:

  • Academic
  • Adventure Learning
  • Co-curricular
  • Habeo ut dem (helping the school community and beyond)

Scholarships

Pupils can apply for an academic, art, dance, drama, music, sport or textiles scholarship. Scholars are assigned a mentor, with whom they meet every half term to help guide them to meet their targets. Scholars concerts, dinners and trips are all part of the package, and pupils are encouraged to enter internal and external competitions, such as the Peterhouse, Cambridge essay writing competition to start exploring their subject and get a taste of university-level research.

Sixth Form

In addition to the activities listed above, pupils in the LVI can opt to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at A Level (as can academic scholars in the IVs). It provides a fantastic opportunity to research and write on something in great depth. Recent topics have included: degeneration of coral reefs, creating a photography exhibition, writing a book for KS2 pupils and the penal system.

All members of the LVI also conduct research into a topic related to their plans for higher education or employment and give an oral presentation to their peers.
