Economics: A Level

What will the girls learn?

Economics is the study of how society can cope with scarcity of resources when faced with infinite human wants. The choices we consequently have to make – as consumers, businesses and societies – shape every aspect of our lives. An understanding of the principles of economics is therefore crucial in promoting the wellbeing of the societies in which we live. The Pearson Edexcel A Economics course is divided into four themes. Two of these focus on microeconomics – the study of individual markets, how they work and why they fail. Here, students learn about business decision-making, the benefits of competition, the behaviour of big business, the failures of markets and the policies of government to address them. The other two themes focus on macroeconomics – how the UK and global economies operate and the policies that shape them. Students examine economic growth, recession and policy; international trade, tariffs and currencies; poverty, inequality and strategies for economic development.

Who is the course for?

Economics is a stimulating, academic A Level course, making it ideal for aspirational students who are seeking a new challenge and who are committed to the hard work needed for success. Requiring a mathematical and logical approach, as well as the capacity to read closely and construct extended answers, Economics will suit students with good numeracy and literacy skills. A genuine interest in national and global current affairs indicates an enthusiasm for Economics. The subject complements well either a mathematics/science A level combination or a social science/humanities combination, such as Geography, Politics, History or RS.

Where will this course take the girls?

The analytical and evaluative nature of Economics, developing both quantitative and qualitative skills, is highly regarded by university admissions tutors and employers alike. More than half of all A Level Economics students at Tudor Hall have chosen to study the subject, or a related subject such as Business Management, at university. To study Economics at university, Mathematics A Level should usually be taken in combination. As well as being ideal preparation for university-level study, it is a valuable foundation for those seeking careers in business, finance, public service, technology, health and education.

English Literature: A Level

What will the girls learn?

The girls will transition from appreciating the shorter texts of GCSE to 19th century novels and a collection of plays and poetry (modern and classic). The girls will also learn how the appreciation of literature incorporates an understanding of critical commentary and the relevance of context.

Who is the course for?

The course is for those who love reading and who find that the poetry, prose and drama studied at GCSE really speaks to them. There is a substantial amount of reading and essay-writing at A-level English Literature, so girls have to be prepared for that - but audiobooks and software can help.

Where will this course take the girls?

English Literature A Level obviously sets up girls perfectly for an English degree, but also prepares girls well for courses such as Law, History, Media, Advertising, Politics, Marketing, Journalism and so on. Even an Oxford Chemistry professor addressing Sixth Form tutors said he appreciated an English Literature A Level because it meant his tutees would be good at researching and good at writing up their own research. In short, an English A Level has a very strong reputation as a facilitator subject for almost all post-18 courses.

Geography: A Level

What will the girls learn?

They will investigate both the physical environment — such as coasts, water and carbon cycles, and natural hazards — and the human dimension, including global governance, urban environments, and changing places. History: A Level

What will the girls learn?
History revisits the past to expand our understanding of the present. It roots each of us in a long continuum of belonging, shaping identities, values and attitudes. At A Level, girls study topics in which human nature, human behaviour and human endeavour have shaped the world in which we live. Tudor historians follow the Edexcel course. We look at seventeenth-century Britain, examining arguments about power, government, freedom, authority, monarchy and religion; eighteenth-century France and the fearful descent towards Revolution and beyond; sixteenth-century Continental Europe and North America and the demonisation of outsiders in the witch craze. Our course overlaps with gender studies, economic developments, the growth of tolerance, theories of democracy and representative government, and cultural flourishing. Girls learn to examine and evaluate evidence, to think objectively, to reach balanced judgements, to empathise and to respond to arguments that are always two-sided, unravelling issues of multiple causation.

Who is the course for?
This is a course for anyone with an interest in both the past and the society we currently inhabit. A flair for working with texts is helpful, as analysis and evaluation of written and visual source material – from historic portraits to propagandist playing cards and television news footage – are key skills. It is not essential to have taken History at GCSE, though an ability to articulate written arguments clearly and succinctly is an advantage.

Where will this course take the girls?
History is about investigating, evaluating and understanding many sources of evidence and reaching judgements. For this reason it is excellent preparation for a wide range of careers, including law, journalism and media, academia, the Civil Service, creative writing, data analysis, teaching, policy and politics. It also prepares girls for future study of History-related disciplines including archaeology, museum curatorship, gender and women’s studies, media studies and History of Art. In a broader sense, History facilitates engaged citizenship, equipping all of us with a greater understanding of the worlds we inhabit, including the institutions that govern our lives, encouraging us to interact positively with people, places and cultures as empathetic, imaginative and intellectually curious world citizens.

History of Art: A Level

Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel

What will the girls learn?

History of Art A Level is a stimulating course which covers a broad range of styles from both the Western canon and beyond the European tradition. Visual analysis skills are developed from day one; the girls will explore why works of art and architecture appear as they do, and how the choice and use of materials may affect meaning.

Themes in art and architecture from pre-and post-1850 are also addressed; at Tudor the two thematic units explore how artists have been inspired by Nature, and how Identity (gender; ethnic; divine) has been represented. In-depth study of the Renaissance in Italy (1420-1520) and European Modernism (1900-1939) facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the factors and events shaping both periods, as well as the study of individual artists, architects and patrons, and key ideals such as Humanism and advocation of the avant-garde. Literacy skills are honed through a variety of short and long answer responses, analysis becomes second-nature and a life-long appreciation of the visual arts is nurtured.

Who is this course for?

If you are curious about the world around you, how both major and minor events can be translated by artists into a relatable visual language, then this is the course for you. There is no requirement to ‘be artistic’; this is a literary subject which draws together social and cultural history, politics, local and global issues and what it is to be human, all while on a journey through art. Class discussion is enjoyable and supportive and all contributions count.

A residential trip to Italy in the UVI is a highlight, seeing works of art and architecture studied in the classroom first-hand is transformative. As a humanities subject, History of Art complements the full raft of subjects in the Sixth Form and provides a considerable advantage in our increasingly image-saturated world.

Where will this course take the girls?

The study of History of Art at university has consistently been a popular choice for Tudor students. As an A Level subject, it enables the girls to develop skills of analysis, evaluation and the ability to disagree agreeably. They are well-versed in preparation for Arts courses too, where writing alongside creative production is often a key element. Being able to ‘look back to look forward’ is an exciting critical experience; History of Art opens doors to so many future opportunities – both in the arts and far beyond.
