IIIs' Brecon Beacons trip

Day 1

Bags backed and waterproofs at the ready, we set off early Thursday morning.  Spirits were high and everyone was looking forward to activities ahead in the Brecon Beacons.

Before getting to the youth hostel, we stopped near Talybont to do our first activity – Tunnel Walking! None of us had ever done anything like this before so there was a mixture of excitement and trepidation in the air. The tunnel was disused and pitch dark once you were in.  We set off in our groups with arms linked.  One person had the important job of holding a stick out to feel for the wall so that we didn’t all bash into it. It was quite scary because you could not see a thing so were relying on each other to get through.

Days 2 and 3

Gorge walking – Dinas Rock

This was most people favourite activity.  After putting our wetsuits on, we walked to the river and jumped in! At first it was really cold but after a while we got used to it. We made our way up the river by swimming in some sections and clambering over rocks in others.  The best bit was definitely saved until last – jumping from the waterfalls into the plunge pools. It was a little bit scary at first because it was so high up, but it was great fun!

Climbing – Dinas Rock

Many of us had never climbed on a real rock face before so we had to put the skills that we had learnt in the indoor climbing centres to good use! Teamwork was really important because we had to help the climber up and down using ropes.

Canoeing - Neath

The first challenge of canoeing for most of us was getting in the boat without it capsizing or moving away from us with one foot still on the canal bank! Once we had overcome this we had to work together to canoe along the canal.  The instructor saw that we were quite confident in the water so got us to stand up and try and row – this was really difficult and lots of us ended up capsizing.

Caving – Porth yr Ogrof

Caving is something that most of us had never done before so we were all quite excited and anxious at the same time. After putting on the huge boiler suits and the helmets were entered the cave from one of the large main entrances. It was amazing to think that it had been created naturally. Some sections of the cave were really narrow and looking at them, none of us thought that we could fit through, but of course we did.  There were sections that were high enough for us to stand up in too!

Mountain walk – Fan Fawr

On the morning of the last day we set of up Fan Fawr, already quite exhausted from the weekends’ activities.  Some parts were really steep and required a lot of energy to get up.  We all made it and although some of it was tough we were really pleased with ourselves.

We would like to thank Miss Brauer, Miss Richards, Miss Rogers and Miss Sexton for taking us.
