Other Sixth Form Courses
Most girls remain at Tudor Hall for their A levels. The attainment of good grades is only one of the advantages of Sixth Form life. A glance at a university application form will show what else is needed. Girls should be in an environment where they:
· broaden their education;
· can take responsibility or hold office;
· take part in extra-curricular activities.
At half-term in the autumn term of the fifth year, parents are invited to discuss with individual teachers progress in GCSE and each pupil’s A level potential.
AS levels were designed to broaden the field of study after GCSE. Most girls at Tudor Hall choose four AS level subjects which they study in the Lower 6 for one year. At the end of this time girls take an external examination in all four subjects.
Towards the end of the Lower Sixth girls must decide which three of their four AS level subjects they will continue to A2 level. In some cases all four subjects may be continued.
Although the system was designed to broaden the field of study it is essential that great care be taken with the choice of subject. Some very competitive courses still require particular subject combinations.
A2 is a continuation of AS level where AS level contributes 50% of the marks. Both parts are needed for a full A level in a particular subject.
There are plenty of opportunities in the Sixth Form to continue or begin other subjects that are not part of the A level curriculum. Some new GCSE subjects such as Dance and Italian can be studied and other languages may be continued as oral lessons. Many girls continue to develop their word processing skills while others choose hostess cookery.
